Veterans' Story Hour

Armed Forces veterans into schools, youth centres and libraries — to recount lived stories of bravery, honour and quiet pride.

You will no doubt have heard of Drag Queen Story Hour, where colourful drag artists visit schools and libraries to tell stories to young and older children. We want to harness some of that energy and design to bring Armed Forces veterans instead — men and women who have borne the weight of service — into classrooms, youth centres and libraries.

The narratives we propose are those of patriotism and civic pride — stories drawn from every background, every race, yet all of them British and all of them unashamed of that identity.

Pilot complete — film now live

Monday 14 September 2026 at The Vine Inn, Cumnor. Four veterans spoke: Dr David Paintin, James Moffat, Steve Lunn and David Drew. Teachers, councillors and other veterans sat in. Questions ran for about forty minutes.

Sponsored by a Civic Future Action Grant. Film free to share.

First school booking

Whitelands Academy, Bicester — Tuesday 10 November 2026, assembly from about 08:30.

Same speakers as the pilot. A school hour is one lesson: short first-person accounts, then questions. No parade. No politics lesson.

Further Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in October and November are open for schools, libraries and groups.

New: Yarning, the winter series

Winter pub evenings in the same spirit as Story Hour. Two or three veterans tell a yarn each from their own lives, then take questions from the room, with Rory Hanrahan hosting every evening himself. Any welcoming pub or space works, fire or no fire. Doors at 7pm, done by about half past nine. Summer sessions will follow in beer gardens and other spaces.

Who this is for

Veterans willing to speak. Schools willing to host an hour. Supporters who want the next generation to hear what service actually means — from those who practised it.

Supported by a Civic Future Action Grant. Starting in Oxfordshire, with the aim of going national.
